About the Event

ABOUT JUDITH SHAMIR

Honoree Judith Shamir has been committed to Jewish education for 50 years beginning in Israel and continuing in Cleveland. Her life has been one of service to Jewish children, instilling knowledge, love, and respect for our values, customs, and traditions, and strengthening their ties to Israel. She was a member of the Educational Consultation Department at the Bureau of Jewish Education, held the position of Language Program Coordinator and instructor at the Cleveland College of Jewish Studies. Judith served as the Superintendent of the Cleveland Hebrew School Talmud Torah for 25 years and later served on the faculty of Gross Schechter Day School. Currently, she serves as Hebrew Literature Instructor at Siegal College’s Life-Long Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University.

Judith wrote and presented the “A Moment of Hebrew” program on WCLV radio. She co-authored educational texts and is a lifelong volunteer for many nonprofits, including the Cleveland Museum of Art.

A Holocaust hidden child survivor, Judith believes in the importance of teaching today’s youth about the events of the Holocaust and the horrific consequences that follow when good people stand by. Over the years she has addressed various audiences from interfaith groups to college and day school students.  Through her involvement in the Face to Face program, she speaks to students in the public school systems and Catholic Diocese.

A long-time member of NA’AMAT Cleveland Council, Judith is currently the Vice President for Programs and was recently installed on the NA’AMAT USA Program Committee. Judith lives in Moreland Hills with husband Izhak. They have 3 children: Dr. Dan Shamir, Daphne Soclof, and Rachel Lapp. Proceeds from the 2020 Golda Meir Award will benefit NA’AMAT’s Agricultural Youth Villages.

*(VIP Reception begins at 6 p.m. Kosher dietary laws observed.)
